Chronic inflammation of stomach and/or duodenum. Ulcers, gastric reflux, burning pain ("heart burn"), digestive problems, nausea and vomiting, lack of appetite. Class 1 carcinogen for gastric adenocarcinoma (cancer).
Drug treatment:
First Line Triple Therapy of two antibiotics, amoxicillin and clarithromycin, and a proton pump stomach acid suppressor.
Drug efficency:
Variously quoted at around 70%, and gradually declining. First Line Therapy is quoted as having up to a 35% failure rate of "non-responders" [Centre for Digestive Diseases, AUS]. H pylori antibiotic-resistance reported as up to 63% [Public Health England, 2008].
Side effects:
Multiple possible, mild to severe including nausea, diarrhea, headaches.
